Action: Directors Label
If video killed the radio star, perhaps The Real World killed the video star. Now that music videos are rarer than ever, what was once a promotional vehicle is becoming collectible high art. This month, Palm Pictures continues its study of the finest in lip-syncing when it releases its second set of Directors Label compilation DVDs. This time, the music videos of directors Mark Romanek, Jonathan Glazer, Anton Corbijn, and Stéphane Sednaoui get the retrospective treatment. “I think these videos have had a massive influence on culture and film, although it’s often viewed the other way around,” says Directors Label producer Richard Brown. At $25 each, or $80 for all four, the DVDs offer hours of images and commentary—more than enough for those who haven’t watched MTV since Room Raiders premiered. —DEIRDRE CORLEY
